Alternative Energy

August 2017   Solarize MDI, a group-purchasing program for homes and businesses in partnership with ReVision Energy, doubled the solar energy capacity on MDI with 76 new solar installations totaling 644 kW.

Summer 2017   Sponsored two High School student interns and a Teacher Mentor who developed projects on LED distribution

Dec 2016   Launched the first municipally sponsored Community Solar Farm (CSF) in Emera Maine territory in Bar Harbor.


Building Efficiency

Oct 2016   Launched the Municipal Energy Benchmarking Collaboration (MBEC) to
track energy data in 40 public buildings and to identify ways to save energy and reduce carbon footprints.

Feb 2017   Created an Environmental Concerns Team (ECO) at MDI High School to pursue student-led sustainability initiatives.

March 2017   Distributed 2,500 LED bulbs to over 400 MDI families to achieve net energy savings and reduced carbon emissions

Jan 2018   Launching Weatherize MDI with educational workshops and bulk
purchasing of energy audits, air sealing, insulation, heat pumps, and additional energy efficiency upgrades.



Oct 2016   Work commenced to increase the number of public electric vehicle
charging stations on MDI

Nov 2016   Presented comments on Acadia National Park’s transportation plan to Superintendent Kevin Schneider and ANP senior staff.

April 2017   Held an Electric Vehicle Symposium at the Seal Cove Auto Museum in collaboration with College of the Atlantic attended by 75+ residents.

May 2017   Promoted the Ride Share and Carpool MDI Facebook program through
social media that currently has 429 members


Public Policy

Oct 2016   Submitted formal comments to the Maine Public Utilities Commission
opposing its proposed rule changes to net metering of solar power – providing a voice for MDI residents.

Feb 2017   Began collaborative work with ACTT Zero Waste Committee to examine
best practices across towns and regions, research municipal codes, and track state legislation.

April 2017   Filed comments with the MPUC on LED streetlight conversion issues to support the work of island governments; attended State House hearing on Rep. Seth Berry’s solar bill.

June 2016   Sold 20 home outdoor composters to community members, stimulating
island-wide growth of home composting.

Jan 2017   Surveyed residents and with highly favorable results commenced the
development of a new centrally located Winter Farmer’s Market to launch 2017-2018.

April 2017   Sold 43 additional home outdoor composters to community members;
organized a home composting workshop to continue education and outreach.


Zero Waste

Jan 2016   Sponsored organic, zero waste dinner at launch event for over 200 people.

April 2016   Held Bar Harbor public information meeting on Pay as You Throw MSW proposal.

Nov 2016   Over 40 residents attended Zero Waste Community Planning workshops.

March 2017   Work began with towns, schools, and civic groups to collect baseline
data and develop a Diversion Resource Map for household and business waste
