Rising Seas, Changing Ecosystems: Impact of Climate Change on MDI

In Down East Maine, climate change is already causing warmer temperatures, longer summers, more extreme precipitation, and higher coastal sea levels. A Climate to Thrive invites you to join us in an interactive conversation about the current and future impacts of climate change on Mount Desert Island. The program will feature a series of brief panel presentations by local scientists, followed by a whole group discussion of personal observations of changes local residents have seen on MDI. Please bring your questions and observations to share. Panelists will include:

  • Karina Graeter, Dartmouth College Grad Student who recently studied impact of climate change on Greenland meltwaters, discussing research on predicted climate change impacts on MDI
  • Carla Guenther, Senior Scientist, Maine Center for Coastal Fisheries presenting the impact on fisheries in the Gulf of Maine
  • Nick Fisichelli, Forest Ecology Director, Schoodic Institute reporting on changing forest ecology
  • Abe Miller-Rushing, Science Coordinator, Acadia National Park discussing how climate change is impacting park operations and the importance of citizen observations to scientific work

Plastics in the Ocean

Plastics in the Ocean

Plastic has recently become known as one of the most serious threats to life on this planet. It does not decompose like other organic compounds and can take more than 400 years to degrade. So, most of it still exists in some form and typically ends up in large bodies of water. A shocking study suggests that by 2050, the oceans will contain more plastic waste than fish, ton for ton -  a rallying cry to do something about it.

Blue mussels, common along the coastline of Maine, are particularly susceptible to microplastic ingestion because of their filter-feeding activity.  Madelyn Woods, Research Coordinator, Marine & Environmental Research Institute in Blue Hill will present the results of water sampling for microplastics around MDI this past summer. ACTT's Zero Waste Committee will describe local efforts to tackle the problem of single use plastic bags and containers in Maine coastal towns.

From The Ashes Film - June 24

The Sierra Club Environmental Film Series will screen a National Graphics Documentary Film that captures Americans in communities across the country as they wrestle with the legacy of the coal industry and what its future should be in this current political climate. From Appalachia to the West's Powder River Basin, the film goes beyond the rhetoric of the "war on coal" to present compelling and often heartbreaking stories about what's at stake for our economy, health, and climate. The film is being introduced by Doreen Stabinsky, Ph.D., professor of Global Environmental Politics at College of the Atlantic. Joe Blotnick, ACTT Coordinator, will share info on how MDI residents are working on a vision of energy independence through clean energy by 2030.
