The Zero Waste committee is looking for volunteers who live in Mount Desert to monitor 1 -5homes in their neighborhood and keep a rough record of what kinds of items are placed out for pick up and how many of them are collected by others before the town truck comes to get the rest. Carey Donavan will collect & compile this anecdotal data and we will use it to advocate for more opportunities for items to be re-used, like similar cleanup weeks in other towns and more re-use centers at transfer stations like Southwest Harbor. If interested, please contact Carey Donavan at her email.
Households can put out any unwanted items for pick-up, except for hazardous waste. Many people take items they can use before pick-up, which helps keep re-usable items out of landfills and incinerators. See the Town's website for more info on scheduled pickup routes.
