Communities are empowered when they set visionary goals and rally to achieve those goals.
A Climate to Thrive seeks to achieve energy independence for Mount Desert Island by 2030. Decentralized, local, renewable energy solutions will reduce pollution, create new businesses, generate year-round jobs that pay a living wage, and bring the community together around the shared goal of preserving our environment.
A Climate to Thrive will bring all four MDI towns together and make the island an epicenter of citizen engagement, environmental sustainability, and economic vitality. ACTT aims to make MDI a model in these respects, showing other communities across Maine, New England, and nationally that these actions simultaneously enhance economic well-being and quality of life.
What We've Achieved
- Launch event with over 200 participants in January 2016 included keynote speech by Venu Rao and breakout planning sessions on focus areas with community experts.
- ACTT has received about $35,000 in grants from local and regional foundations. These funds helped ACTT hire a Project Coordinator and will support our summer gathering and initial projects. We thank our supporters; read more about them and how to contribute to ACTT.
- Since January 2016, the six committees have been meeting regularly, formulating plans and beginning actions. Read updates on each committee on their individual pages.
- ACTT held a summer gathering on July 31, 2016. Read more and join us for an afternoon of information from local, regional and national leaders, updates from ACTT and more.
